Small old toys

Small old toys
Few torn pieces
Reminds the baby smell of your hair

First few steps
Of a tentative toddler
Giant steps in the proud parents' lair

Happiness galore
Listening to your first utterances
Everlasting memories that stay

When the nest is empty
And when the memory rules supreme
Makes the dull days bright and gay

We know the rules
Don't you worry ?
About the modern living and all that stuff

We are modern
In our ancient ways
We know the "Letting Go" without a huff

I worry for you
My darling child
Will you be as bold then ?

I pray for you
That you get strength
To bear the possible pain

As the rules day
As old as are they
Whatever goes up comes down

When you reach our age
And when your nest becomes empty
Will you be able to bear it without a frown ?

I got a thought
For all the parents
Here it is, two pennies worth in all

Stay close to the child
And the toys
Bright memories of these days will keep you tall.
